How much salt for an Intex pool

Your salt needs to reach 3,000 ppm (parts per million, the number a salt test shows), so put in enough to get there. You'll see that figure as the goal in Intex's salt chart. Salt should stay within 2,500 to 3,500 ppm. Tip the salt into the water. Let the pump run nonstop for 24 hours. After that, power up the cell.

  1. Pump on. Pour it around the deep end, not into the skimmer.
  2. Brush any salt off the floor until it's gone.
  3. Run the pump 24 hours and test. Add the rest only if the reading is still short.
How this is worked out

Gallons = A × B × average depth × 7.5 for a rectangle, 6.7 for an oval and 5.9 for a round pool (diameter × diameter), the factors in Hayward's manual; 7.0 for a kidney (length × average width), from Inyo's sizing guide. Pounds of salt = (target ppm − your ppm) × gallons × 8.34 ÷ 1,000,000. A gallon of water weighs 8.34 pounds. Bags round up. In liters: kilograms = ppm difference × liters ÷ 1,000,000.

How much salt should go in my pool?

Every pool gets aimed at 3,000 ppm in Intex's table, and Intex's manual calls 2,500 to 3,500 ppm acceptable for Krystal Clear units. Match your pool size in Intex's table and you'll see the dose you need.

Hold off on starting the chlorinator for now. Give the filter pump a full 24 hours of nonstop running so the salt can dissolve. Hold your cyanuric acid near 1% of the salt weight you've put in.

Every row doses to 3,000 ppm. Pounds and gallons come straight off the Intex salt table, and the gallons are the water Intex says the pool holds when filled.

Codes 91 and 92 explained

Seeing 91 means the salt level is low. Did it stay on once you added the whole dose listed in the manual? Adding more salt is off limits. Code 91 or 92 can be triggered by hot water. Per Intex's support guide, check whether the water is at 35 °C or above. Water that warm needs cooling down.

Seeing 92 means there's too much salt in the water. Take out roughly 25% of the pool water and top off with fresh water until code 92 goes away.

Why Intex gallon numbers seem low?

Your pool isn't counted as full to the top by Intex. Intex's capacity chart figures a frame pool at 90% full. With Easy Set and oval pools, the figure is 80% full.

Base your dose on the gallons Intex gives for the model you own.

Questions people bring to the counter

What's the right salt amount for my Intex pool?

Find the model and size you own in Intex's table. Following that amount brings the water to 3,000 ppm. A reading between 2,500 and 3,500 ppm works fine. When code 91 appears, your salt is low.

What's next once the salt goes in?

Pour in your salt and keep the filter pump going 24 hours straight so it dissolves. After that, turn the chlorinator on. Your cyanuric acid needs to sit at about 1% of the salt's weight.

Which capacity figure applies to my pool?

Go with the gallons Intex publishes for the model you have. Frame pools are figured at 90% full by Intex. An Easy Set or oval pool is counted at 80% full. Use that figure to size your dose and hit 3,000 ppm. Let the pump run 24 hours before turning the cell on.
