How much salt for a 16x48 pool

You'll want 110 lb of salt for an Easy Set pool. Go with 125 lb for a frame-style pool. Intex's own salt table gives these figures for reaching 3,000 ppm (parts per million, the number a salt test shows).

  1. Pump on. Pour it around the deep end, not into the skimmer.
  2. Brush any salt off the floor until it's gone.
  3. Run the pump 24 hours and test. Add the rest only if the reading is still short.
How this is worked out

Gallons = A × B × average depth × 7.5 for a rectangle, 6.7 for an oval and 5.9 for a round pool (diameter × diameter), the factors in Hayward's manual; 7.0 for a kidney (length × average width), from Inyo's sizing guide. Pounds of salt = (target ppm − your ppm) × gallons × 8.34 ÷ 1,000,000. A gallon of water weighs 8.34 pounds. Bags round up. In liters: kilograms = ppm difference × liters ÷ 1,000,000.

What a 16x48 pool takes in salt?

Put in 110 lb for an Easy Set, or 125 lb when it's a frame pool. That amount brings you to 3,000 ppm. Intex's happy zone runs from 2,500 up to 3,500 ppm.

Per Intex's manual, leave your pump going 24 hours nonstop so the salt dissolves. Hold cyanuric acid (stabilizer) near 1% of how much salt you used.

Every row doses to 3,000 ppm. Pounds and gallons come straight off the Intex salt table, and the gallons are the water Intex says the pool holds when filled.

Easy Set versus frame pool

Filled to 80%, an Easy Set pool takes on 4,273 gallons. Intex's capacity chart is where that number comes from. For salt, 110 lb does the job.

With a frame pool at 90% full, you're looking at 5,061 gallons. That calls for 125 lb of salt.

What those error codes tell you?

When salt levels drift, your Intex unit blinks a code at you.

Intex support explains that on Intex units, a 91 reading signals too little salt while 92 signals too much. If 91 keeps showing once you've put in the full dose, hold off on adding extra salt.

Questions people bring to the counter

What's the gallon capacity of a 16x48 pool?

Filled to 80%, an Easy Set of this size takes 4,273 gallons. Fill a frame pool of this size to 90% and it holds 5,061 gallons. Since a frame model takes extra water, extra salt is needed too.

What amount of salt should you buy?

To reach 3,000 ppm, put in 110 lb for an Easy Set or 125 lb for a frame model. Look at the bag labels and keep going until you reach the full amount. Pour it all in and leave the filter pump running nonstop for 24 hours.

Is it possible to oversalt your pool?

Yes. Intex targets 2,500 to 3,500 ppm. Seeing code 92 tells you the level is above where it should be. Take out roughly 25% of the water and top back up with fresh. Repeat that until code 92 disappears. Water heated to 35 °C or higher can trigger those codes as well. Give cooling it a try.

Is salt okay in an Intex pool?

Yes. Intex's saltwater systems target 3,000 ppm. Low salt shows up as code 91. When the warning remains after a complete dose, hold off on adding more. Leave the pump going nonstop for 24 hours so the salt dissolves. Switch the generator on after that.
